33rd Annual

Mike Winge

2016 Riggs Open Champion

18 Holes - Links at Northfork GC (Ramsey, MN) Par 72

The 33rd Riggs Open was slated to be a 2-day event, as always.  But, with rain forecast for the entire day on Saturday, we had to cancel the first round.

So, Sunday’s round would be an 18-hole chase for the Riggs Cup!  Kevin Kramm (42, E) and Kurt Bursey (45, E) started off as the early leaders - thru 9 holes.  Then, on the back nine, Mike Winge caught fire - shooting a 39 - to post a score of 82, which was a one-under net.  A few competitors were still within range of Winge as they completed their round.  Kurt Bursey finished with a score of 91, to put him at +1 (and, 2 back of Winge).  As the final group came to 18, one more player - Scott Riggs - still had a chance to win or tie.  He needed a par on the final hole to tie and force a playoff.  18 is a long par-4 and his drive was in the left rough.  His second shot came up about 60 yards short of the green - in the fairway.  So, he would need to get up-and-down from there to force the tie.  His third shot found the green - about 15-20 feet from the cup.  He would have a putt to try to force the tie!  But, the putt would go past the hole, and Riggs would tap in for bogey.  Winge (-1) had a one-shot victory, and his 3rd Riggs Open title (‘95, ‘10)!  Riggs (E) finished 2nd for the second time in his RO career (‘96), Bursey (+1) finished in third place.  John Bevans (+3), Brent Riggs (+4) and Gary Nagle (+4) rounded out the top 5.

Congrats to the 2016 Riggs Open champion, Mike Winge!!
